Decide what freedom means to you

A number on a chart is only useful if you know what it is for.

Principle 1 of 10 · Earn and aim

I chased money for years before I asked what I wanted it for. At twenty, on a beach, I thought the answer was to stop working. Ten years later, with the number growing, I found that doing nothing all day was not what I wanted at all. What I wanted was to be able to choose: which work, how much, and for whom.

So before any of the money stuff, decide what freedom means to you. The planner asks for a freedom age. It is not a retirement date. It is the age from which you no longer depend on a salary to pay for your life. Some people want it at 45. Others are happy at 65 with a bigger house along the way. Neither is wrong; each needs a different chart.

Pick an age, look at the chart it gives you, and treat it as a first draft. Everything from here on is about moving that line.

Two people, twenty and forty years on

Ana picked a freedom age and looked at the chart it makes. Ivo said "someday" and saves whatever is left at the end of the month, which comes to about half as much.
